Fuzz-butt, a forager

Forager

The last three weeks of a worker's life, spent outside.

Flies 500 miles on wings the size of confetti, then tells everyone where the good flowers are by dancing at them.

  • Visits several hundred flowers a trip and sticks to one species, which is why the plant benefits
  • Carries pollen home packed into baskets on her back legs
  • Tells the rest of the hive where the food is by dancing the angle to the sun on vertical comb
  • Flies until her wings wear out, which is roughly 500 miles

A worker bee makes about one twelfth of a teaspoon of honey in her life and lives roughly six weeks in summer. She is a named companion in a real, photographed colony, not an individually tracked insect. What this paid for is real: frames, foundation, feed and the hours.

The PDF is the full card, made to print. The image is a wide version sized for posting.

What is this?

Somebody is paying for a real bee.

Holybees keeps honey bees in a Victorian churchyard in Isleworth. Sponsoring one pays for the frames, the feed and the winter she has to survive first. Every sponsor gets a numbered card like this one.

While you are here

It takes six to eight kilograms of honey for bees to make one kilogram of wax, which is why beekeepers hand back drawn comb rather than making them build it twice.
